What is SUCCESS for you?

Ever since I was a child, I often heard the word “success.” My parents would tell me to study hard and work hard so that I would become successful. Movies and TV series showed me that being successful meant having a big house, nice cars, a business empire, or a high-paying job.

Now, as an adult, I have realized that success is not a “one-size-fits-all” ideology. Talking to different people has given me different insights, and I learned that we all define success differently.

I read the book Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki, and it delved into how people from different social classes also view success differently. A poor dad sees success as securing a good-paying job, while the rich dad focuses on business and investments.

OFWs chase success by going abroad for greener pastures, while foreigners from Europe and the US are also moving to the Philippines to live simpler lives.

Andi Eigenmann left showbiz at the height of her career to live simply on the island of Siargao, while young teens from the provinces line up for Pinoy Big Brother as a stepping stone into showbiz.

I asked my mom, “What is success for you?” Her answer was simple: it is seeing her children successful, healthy, and happy.

So, what does it mean to be successful? How would you know if you have achieved success?

For me, success is not defined by the physical things a person has. It is about achieving happiness, peace of mind, and contentment.

I feel successful when I am happy with the person I chose to spend the rest of my life with. Choosing your partner in life can make or break you.

I feel successful when I have peace of mind—when I let go of anything toxic, such as negative people around me. Decluttering the things that no longer spark joy also helps. Always remember that not everyone is your friend. Be careful about what you allow your heart, mind, and soul to be fed with.

I feel successful when I achieve contentment—when I no longer aim for riches and power alone. I feel happy when I have a warm home, surrounded by the people I love; when I have more than enough to pay my bills, travel, and splurge a little. I feel content when I can eat whatever I want, anytime I want. I can pay for all my basic needs.

Whether you have already achieved success or are still working toward it, it is important to remain grateful. Thank God for helping you every step of the way, and be patient if success has not yet come. Do your best, and God will do the rest.
